THE ART OF LOU POLICE

About Lou

INSPIRED BY DIFFERENCE.

As a child, I now realize, I had two dominant desires that compelled me to express myself through drawing and painting. One, was an eye for beauty, in all its forms, and two, I had a desire to tell stories. To share with others, images from my imagination and my life experiences. Textures, colors, shapes, people, animals (horses, horses, horses!), adventure, and drama! These filled my childhood thoughts and called for some kind of expression. Nothing has changed.

On a recommendation from one of my Junior College art instructors I applied to Art Center College of Design in LA/Pasadena. I was accepted and began a 4 year transformation that gave me the tools and foundational skills to, eventually, do just about anything I wanted to do, artistically.

My portfolio’s foundation is figure drawing… mainly the clothed figure with a fashion illustration emphasis. There is no substitute for drawing the figure with this emphasis! Drapery and folds in the clothing, the figure in movement, anatomy, accurately capturing directions and angles for dynamics, composition, SHAPE!… all are covered in this approach to drawing.

As far as employment, I began my career in the animation industry, working for Ralph Bakshi on his version of Lord of the Rings. I then was hired by Richard Williams, the brilliant UK animator, working with him from his studio in Los Angeles. I was also employed, in chronological order, at DIC Animation, Warner Brothers Television Animation (Tiny Toons and Animaniacs), Warner Brothers Feature Animation (The Quest for Camelot), Disney Toon Studios (Bambi 2 and Kim Possible) and Cartoon Network (Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends). My duties in these studios included character design, background design and painting, animation, storyboarding, visual development, and art direction.

Through the years, as needed, l’ve worked as a freelance illustrator doing movie poster designs, advertising comps and storyboards, fashion illustration, book and magazine illustrations, and live action production art for various studios including Industrial Light and Magic for Ghostbusters 2.

Western Art is also one of my passions. I enjoy traveling, at times sitting astride a horse, throughout the Southwest and up into Utah, Wyoming and Montana. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience my share of adventure (and some drama) in the places l’ve been able to visit and exhibit my art.

Schools where l’ve had the privilege to teach include: Art Center College of Design, Laguna College of Art and Design, Cal Arts, The Fashion Institute of Los Angeles, and Woodbury University.

I currently live in Tennessee, just outside of Nashville… I love Tennessee!! Also currently, I’m teaching at Laguna College of Art, remotely, while visually developing my own movie script and doing portraits of the special people who live and work in my local area.
